Google Trap Proves Bing is Copying

by Paul Wilson

Search Engine Land’s Danny Sullivan reported today that Google setup a “honeypot” to prove that Bing is copying its search results. According to Danny’s article Bing does not deny Google’s allegations:

“Opt-in programs like the [Bing] toolbar help us with clickstream data, one of many input signals we and other search engines use to help rank sites. This “Google experiment” seems like a hack to confuse and manipulate some of these signals.”

Basically, Bing is stating that copying Google’s results  is an everyday affair when ranking sites! Is Bing’s practice of copying Google’s results illegal? Probably not, but if it is trying to dethrone the king of search I don’t think copycating Google will achieve this objective.

When I was doing research on this article I came across a little known fact about Bing’s source code. Apparently, if you dig through the millions of lines of Bing’s code you will find on line 102,918 the following:

if (!$result) {
$message = 'JUST GOOGLE IT' . mssql_error() . "
";
}

Whether this is true or not I don’t know. However, Google is conclusively discovering that a major algorithm for Bing is to “Just Google It.” ~Paul W.
