Internet Money—Lesson 2, Part 1b: What To Call Your Website

Today is my birthday, and unfortunately for me I woke up with a head cold. However, fortunately for you since I decided to spend my birthday with my wife I cleared my day. Yet, I’m miserable and my wife can only only dote on me so much. So, I decided that I could be miserable and blog just as easy as I could as being just miserable. Therefore, I figure I would catch up on my posts, since it has been a few weeks from my last post.

We left off on how to find and name your domain. I promise to not be so long winded (but I can’t guarantee it). As far as the domain name goes, I recommend trying to find an old domain that is generic. A four or five letter domain that just has consonants helps. That way you can create an acronym for your website, and if you decide to change directions on your website down the road you can just create another acronym.

Case in point, lets say you own the domain scwp.org, and you decide you want to do a cell phone website. You can call it, “Supportive Cellular Web Professional.” However, for whatever reason, you decide to change your website to provide school loans, you then can call it, “SChool Web Program.” Either way, nobody is going to really care, including Google, what your acronym is.

PubCon’s Best & Lamest Schwag Award!

PubCon’s Best & Lamest Schwag Award!

The fun thing about going to industry conferences are all the schwag products you get from the exhibitors. I know these companies spend thousands and thousands of dollars to bring us the next cool gizmo or gadget with their business’s name brand on it.

So, to show my gratitude to the corporate dollars this post is specifically to give back the love—or link love—to those companies who gave me free stuff. This post is also about spotlighting the best and worst schwag being handed out here in Vegas. Hopefully, this feedback will assist those seemingly wealthy corporate marketing departments in bringing us cooler and better schwag.

Notes from PubCon 2008 (Thursday)

Notes from PubCon 2008 (Thursday)

Yet another great day at PubCon. Unfortunately, I was up until 4am watching some great shows on Hulu. Has anyone noticed that there seems to be better viewing content on the web these days than on regular network television? It seems that it is hard to go bed at a decent hour this week—I just don’t have my beautiful wife here to motivate me to go to bed early =). Boy do I miss her!

Okay, I am done with my sentimentalism. I do have to apologize in advance about this post. I know that if I sit down and reformat Thursday’s PubCon notes that you will never get this post. So, here are my raw notes in all their imperfections. If you have any questions of clarification let me know.

Notes from PubCon (Wednesday) 2008

I was told that PubCon evenings were all about staying out late and drinking your liver away. Yes, I was up late last night, but since I don’t drink I was transcribing my session notes instead for your enjoyment. Hopefully, this evening will be a little easier.

I have to admit that I am a schwag junky, and PubCon has not disappointed me. I will post all the schwag I got shortly.

Notes From PubCon 2008 (Tuesday)

Note: I “borrowed” the image for this post from another Utah SEO web marketer. It’s a great depiction on how PubCon first got started—in a pub.

I am here in Las Vegas attending PubCon. It’s kind of a long story of why I am here, and I will spare you the details. However, I can say that I wish a few of my web marketing buddies could of joined me for this. There is so much information being offered and so many people to network with, that it is a little overwhelming doing it solo.
